I’ve always loved horses here are some works that honor these gentle giants.
My still life works are a study in light and shadow and color. I'll work from life and also from my own photographic reference. Inspired by the Italian master Luciano Ventrone, I strive to capture every nuance of reality.
My koi paintings are primarily about movement and color. While the fish are painted realistically the space in which they move is a decorative impression of a pond. These opposing treatments of subject and background allow the koi to seemingly be able to swim off the canvas. I use gold leaf in my koi backgrounds.
These Paintings are executed in the studio. After I paint a field sketch and get a feel for what I want to paint in a larger format, I'll paint from memory so what conveys into the work is a feeling and a much more tranquil scene. This process allows me to not be so concerned about the details of what is actually in the estuary itself.
The French term “en plein air” means “in the open air” and is the act of painting outdoors. To paint outside from life is both challenging and rewarding. Each time I paint out in the field I learn and advance just a little bit more!
